Turkey Oat Meatballs with Marinara Sauce

Instead of using breadcrumbs for our meatballs, we’re upping our fiber today by way of rolled oats. Sounds crazy, but the oats actually work really, really well. Seriously. They’re a much more frugal, healthy, and surprisingly tasty alternative. And when you pair these meatballs with a basic marinara sauce, you really can’t go wrong.

Turkey Oat Meatballs

1 pound ground turkey – $3.09
1/2 cup rolled oats -$0.19
1 large egg – $0.15
2 cloves garlic, minced – $0.02
1 tbsp dried basil – $0.05
1 tbsp dried oregano – $0.05
1 tsp salt – $0.01
1 tbsp vegetable oil – $0.03

Marinara sauce

2 15 oz cans tomato sauce – $1.38
1 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes – $0.69
1/2 medium-sized yellow onion, diced – $0.20
2 tbsp white vinegar – $0.02
3 cloves garlic, minced – $0.03
2 tbsp dried basil – $0.10
1 tbsp dried oregano – $0.05
1 tbsp sugar – $0.01
1 tsp red pepper flakes – $0.03
1 tbsp vegetable oil – $0.03

Optional: 16 ounces whole wheat pasta – $1.25


  • Mix together all meatball ingredients except vegetable oil. Roll mixture into small balls and brown in one tablespoon of vegetable oil in a dutch oven or saucepan over medium heat. Brown all sides of meatballs, then remove from pot.
  • To that same saucepan, add remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil, diced onion, and garlic and cook until translucent. Add the rest of the ingredients, cover, and bring to a simmer.
  • Add meatballs back to sauce, reduce flame, and bring to a slight simmer. Cook for anywhere from 30-60 minutes.
  • Prepare pasta according to directions and serve.
