Healthy Refried Beans


I’m not going to write about how inexpensive and nutritionally-packed beans are. I assume you already know.


Healthy Refried Beans

16 oz dried pinto beans – $0.99
1/2 cup diced yellow onion – $0.30
3 cloves garlic – $0.05
2 tsp salt – $0.01
1 tbsp cumin – $0.03
1 tbsp chili powder – $0.02
1 tbsp olive oil – $0.15
8 cups water – free


  • Saute onion, garlic, chili powder, and cumin in olive oil until onions are slightly cooked.
  • Add beans, salt, and one cup of water, being sure to stir the bottom of the pot so nothing burns. Add the rest of the water and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and let softly boil for two hours.

Makes approximately 8 servings.
